Sulphur dioxide is produced by roasting, e.g. at 700-800‹ C. a mixture of iron sulphate and iron pyrites, in which the weight ratio of sulphate sulphur to sulphide sulphur is 0À25 to 0À75:1, in air which is present in an amount of up to 1-3 times that theoretically required for the complete combustion of iron pyrites. The roasting is preferably carried out in, a fluidized bed. The iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) which is formed during roasting may be periodically or continuously removed from the reaction zone.
