Abstract
1,267,519. Sulphur dioxide. IMPERIAL SMELTING CORP. (NSG.) Lfd. 26 Nov., 1969 [9 Dec., 1968], No. 58385/68. Heading C1A. A gas containing more than 6% v./v. SO 2 and having a low oxygen content is produced by roasting a metallic sulphide ore in an O 2 containing gas wherein (1) The gas is fed to a hot sinter bed to which is fed a predetermined amount of ore, and (2) At least part of the exhaust gas is fed to a conventional roaster containing the remainder of the ore so that substantially all the O 2 reacts. The roaster of stage 2 is preferably of fluidized bed type, and the gas is preferably air. The sulphide content of the ore used in stage 2 may be in excess of that. required to react with the O 2 . Ores specified are those containing substantially Zn, Pb, or Fe sulphides. The product gas may be used for the production of sulphuric acid.
