Abstract

1,248,687. Roasting sulphidic ores. BADISCHE ANILIN & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10825/69. Heading C1A. A process for the production of a gas containing sulphur dioxide consisting of the stagewise roasting of arsenic- and/or antimonycontaining sulphidic materials (e.g. iron pyrites) with a gas containing oxygen in a fluidized bed, wherein there is provided a separate supply of the oxygen containing gas for (and a separate withdrawal of the roaster gas from) the preroasting, and after roasting stages, is improved when using material having a particle size up to 100 microns (e.g. flotation concentrates) by reducing the throughput of both the material and the oxygen to the preroasting stage to 25-45% of that which would be used if material having a particle size up to 10 mm were used, the throughput to the after-roasting stage not being so reduced but the reduced output from the pre-roasting stage being supplemented by the use of an auxiliary pre-roasting furnace. Preferably conditions are a 30-40% reduction compared to material having a particle size of 6 mm. used. In the example ion pyrites are preroasted to FeS.3Fe 3 0 4 at 850-900‹ C. and after-roasted to Fe 2 O 3 at 750-800‹ C.
