Abstract

1,248,663. Recovering copper and molybdenum from ores. ANACONDA CO. 9 July, 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 34472/69. Heading C1A. Copper and molybdenum values are recovered from ores by a process in which a finely-divided ore containing oxidized minerals of copper or molybdenum or both, is heated in a substantially non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature in the range from 450‹ to 800‹ F. in contact with elemental sulphur until the said oxidized minerals of copper and/or molybdenum have been converted to sulphides, and thereafter the sulphidized minerals are recovered from the other ore constituents by a flotation process. The sulphur, which is preferably vaporized at a temperature 50‹ F. below the reaction zone temperature, is preferably introduced in the form of a sulphur vapour-laden non-oxidizing gas such as CO, CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 or SO 2 or mixtures thereof, the partial pressure of sulphur in the gas being at or below the equilibrium partial pressure of solid sulphur at the lowest temperature in the reaction zone. The reaction may be carried out in a rotary kiln, or a fluidized bed wherein the fluidizing gas is the sulphur vapour/ non-oxidizing gas mixture.
