Abstract

1,265,486. Beneficiation of molybdenite concentrate. CONTINENTAL ORE CO. Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 24175/68. Heading C1A. A process for the beneficiation of molybdenite concentrate comprises pre-heating the concentrate under inert conditions and contacting with oxygen at an initial temperature of at least 385‹ C. in order to form the trioxide, the maximum temperature reached during this contact being with the range 500-900‹ C. Pure oxygen may be used as such or diluted with air or oxygen. The pre-heating may be in an inert atmosphere preferably in a fluidized bed, or in a container substantially filled with concentrate. The process may be continuous, the concentrate being carried through a pre-heating zone and then through an oxidation zone, the latter preferably being a shallow static zone incorporating a rake. The effluent gases may be cooled, filtered and passed through ethanolamine whereupon the SO 2 is removed but may be regenerated by heating the ethanolamine. After oxidation the concentrate may be crushed and reroasted in air and may have its copper content reduced by treatment with hydrochloric acid and ferric chloride, thereafter adding first sodium carbonate or ammonium chloride to give a pH of 1À8-4À5 and separating the precipitated ferric molybdate and adding secondly sodium carbonate to give a pH of 5À7-6À5 so as to precipitate the copper carbonate.
