Abstract
1443202 Extracting chromium from chromium ores PRODUITS CHIMIQUES UGINE KUHLMANN 11 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 27616/73 Heading C1A Extraction of chromium as a chromate from a chromium ore is carried out by a method wherein particles of chromium ore having a mean dimension of less than 250 Á (as defined) are maintained suspended in a bath of molten salts into which an oxygen containing gas is injected. Preferred molten salts are those of sodium chromate, Na 2 CO 3 and Na 2 SO 4 or eutectic mixtures of same, the ore to salt ratio being in the range 1 to 5-20. Reaction temperatures of 800-900‹ C. are used with or without a catalyst which can be iron or manganese oxides. Recovery of the resulting chromate is effected either by leaching the product with water or by decanting the molten product to remove insoluble impurities and then allowing the chromate to crystallize by cooling.
