Abstract

1452228 Production of elemental copper H K THOMAS 11 Jan 1974 [11 Jan 1973] 01395/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A method of producing elemental copper from scrap or concentrates consists of treating the input material with ferric chloride to produce cuprous chloride, purifying and reacting it with molten pure zinc to give molten elemental copper. Input materials 10 are converted to cuprous chloride 12 by leaching with ferric chloride solution 13, filtering 15 and evaporating 17 to give a residue of mixed cuprous and ferrous chlorides. The ferrous chloride is dissolved out 19, treated and recycled as below, leaving solid cuprous chloride 20, which is purified by heating 24 and distilling 25 to remove impurities 26<SP>1</SP>. The purified cuprous chloride is then reduced by contact with pure zinc vapour 27 at over 1100‹ C., producing molten elemental copper 30, which is withdrawn and zinc chloride vapour 29. The zinc chloride vapour from the furnace is then reacted with scrap aluminium 11 in a further furnace, to form pure zinc 27 and aluminium chloride 31, the zinc being re-cycled to the cuprous chloride reducing furnace 28. The aluminium chloride may be treated either (1) by condensing and melting with potassium and sodium chloride and electrolysed in a known manner to produce aluminium metal which is removed from the cell, the liberated chlorine being used to oxidize the ferrous chloride solution 23 dissolved out of the mixed chlorides and re-used as a leaching agent 13 or (2) by reacting with steam to form alumina, the HCl thus being liberated being used to acidify the ferrous chloride solution 23a which is then catalytically oxidized to be re-used as leaching agent 13a.
