Abstract
1407705 Recovering cobalt and manganese STANDARD OIL CO 8 Dec 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 56735/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Cobalt and/or manganese are recovered from catalyst residues also containing iron and which result from the production of aromatic carboxylic acids by (1) extracting the residue with dilute sulphuric acid at a temperature of at least 120‹ F., (2) separating the extract solution from insoluble materials, (3) adding ammonium, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide to the extract to decrease its pH to 5À0 to 5À5 whereby iron hydroxide is precipitated. (4) separating the iron precipitate from the extract, (5) adding an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate to the resulting extract to increase its pH to at least 8À0 whereby cobalt and/or manganese carbonate is precipitated and (6) separating these carbonates from the mother liquor.
