Abstract

1,262,401. Benificiation of ilmenite; iron oxide. BENILITE CORP. 14 April, 1970 [15 Oct., 1969], No. 17691/70. Headings C1A and C1N. A titaniferous ore or slag, e.g. ilmenite, ilmenite magnetite, ilmenite-hematite, titaniferous magnetite, and titaniferous hematite, is benificiated 'by leaching it in a digester with hydrochloric acid leach liquor, the leaching liquor being heated during this process by feeding into the digester a vapour mixture formed by distilling an azeotropic mixture of HCl -and -water, by which means the HCl content of the leach liquor is simultaneously replenished. The leaching may be .conducted at a pressure of 20-50 p.s.i.g. and a temperature of 108‹ to 145‹ C., and the HCl content of the leach liquor may be recovered and reused in the process either as leach liquor or as the source of the vapour mixture. The preferred HCl concentration of the leach liquor is 20% by wt., and the leaching may be performed in two counter current stages. Depending on the ferrie/ferrous content of the ore, it may first be subjected to a reducing step, e.g. with coke at 815‹ to 1090‹ C. The iron content of the used leach liquor may be obtained as the oxide by hydrolysis of the chloride at high temperatures, e.g. 260-500‹ C., by direct contact with combustion gases. This simultaneously regenerates the HCl leach liquor.
