Abstract

In a process for the recovery of titanium from titanium ores containing iron to yield substantially all the titanium as a solution of titanium tetrachloride, the ore is reacted with aqueous hydrochloric acid containing at least 32% by weight of HCl at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C. for not more than 2 hours, the reactants being vigorously agitated throughout, e.g. by tumbling. The temperature should not be above 100 DEG C. to prevent the formation by hydrolysis of insoluble titanium dioxide, but phosphorus pentoxide, phosphoric acid or a salt thereof may be added which permits operation at temperatures up to 140 DEG C. The solution is separated from insoluble residue, and the iron chloride in solution thermally decomposed to iron oxide and hydrochloric acid recovered. In examples ilmenite is decomposed with hydrochloric acid solution, with and without added phosphorus pentoxide.
