Abstract
103,696. Vis, G. N. Feb. 9, 1916. Alkali chromates are obtained by treating a chromium ore, such as chromite, with fused caustic soda, with or without sodium carbonate or with a mixture of caustic potash and potassium carbonate at a temperature well below 1000‹C. at atmospheric pressure and with the injection of air or oxygen, the reaction being effected in metal vats or vessels. The carbonates may be mixed with lime, and fusible salts, such as sodium chloride, may be added. The fused mass is treated with water and filtered, the filtrate being then freed from silica, alumina, and carbonates by diluting and boiling with lime. The filtrate is concentrated to separate, first added salts, such as sodium chloride, and then alkali chromate. The caustic alkali remaining, containing a little chromate, is evaporated to dryness and used again. Specification 1046/72 is referred to.
