Abstract
284,098. Dicker, S. G. S., (Wiarda & Co., J. C.). March 1, 1927. Drawings to Specification. Ammonium sulphate and chloride.-The manganese content of a manganese-bearing ore is reduced to manganese oxide by roasting the finely-divided ore in the presence of a gaseous or solid reducing agent, and the ore is then leached with ammonium sulphate solution at a temperature of about 80‹ C., the ammonia liberated during this operation being recovered in either gaseous or aqueous form. The manganese sulphate solution produced is filtered and cooled, and may then be treated with the recovered ammonia, resulting in the regeneration of ammonium sulphate solution, which is then used for subsequent leaching operations, and the precipitation of manganese hydroxide, which is separated, dried and heated at a temperature of about 825‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere, producing pure manganese oxide. Ammonium chloride may be used as the leaching solution in place of the sulphate. Partially leached ore may be treated with fresh leaching solution, the same solution being subsequently used for fresh unleached ore.
