Abstract

1331932 Benification of vanadium containing material INTERNATIONAL CARBON CORP 2 Oct 1970 [3 Oct 1969] 48810/69 Addition to 1244606 Heading C1A Vanadium-containing material, other than vanadium-containing slag, is(a) pre-heated under inert conditions to a temperature of at least 400‹ C. (e.g. up to 1000‹ C.) and then (b) contacted with oxygen at a temperature maximum in the range 600-1200‹ C. thereby forming water soluble vanadium compounds, steps (a) and (b) optionally being repeated. The vanadium-containing material may be fly ash, titaniferous ore, ferrophosphorus, optionally containing vanadium slag. An alkali metal salt, e.g. NaCl, NaCO 3 , Na 2 SO 4 and/or KCl may be added to the material prior to oxygen contact in step (b). The inert conditions may be provided by a N 2 atmosphere or by treatment in a vessel filled with material. The O 2 may be provided by O 2 , O 2 -enriched air or air optionally containing an inert gas. The material is preferably ground to 37-149Á prior to step (a). The oxidized material may be treated to recover vanadium oxide.
