Abstract
1423584 Leaching of cobalt and/or nickel values ANGLO AMERICAN CORP OF SOUTH AFRICA Ltd 25 Oct 1973 [10 April 1972] 49691/73 Heading C1A Cobalt and/or nickel values are leached from e.g. manganese nodules containing one or both of these metals in oxidized form by contacting with a leach solution containing ammonium sulphite and/or ammonium bisulphite in a substantially non oxidizing atmosphere. The starting material is preferably in finely ground form and is slurried with the leaching solution. Convenient pulp densities are in the range of from 10 to 50% weight basis and it is preferred to operate under basic conditions and at a temperature exceeding 25‹ C. The leach solution may be made by passing SO 2 gas through aqueous ammonia.
