Abstract

1297743 Sodium pentaborate FERRO CORP 30 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 12345/71 Heading C1A Sodium pentaborate is produced from sodium calcium borate ores of ulexite type by introducing CO 2 into an agitated aqueous suspension of finely divided sodium calcium borate ore at a temperature of at least 30‹ C. to solubilize at least some of the B 2 O 3 content of the ore, separating the insoluble material from the solution and recovering sodium pentaborate from the solution. It is preferred that the water to ore weight ratio is initially at least 2 : 1 and that the amount of CO 2 introduced is more than the amount indicated by the stoichiometry of the reaction. The initial ore may be ground with water, and screened or centrifuged to remove water-soluble materials prior to forming the suspension to be treated with CO 2 .
