Abstract

1362815 Copper and nickel recovery KENNECOTT COPPER CORP 16 July 1971 [16 July 1970] 33602/71 Heading C1A Copper and nickel values are separated from deep sea manganese nodules or equivalent complex ore by leaching the ore with an aqueous solution containing ammonium and manganous ions to take copper and nickel into solution and separating off the leach solution (which may also contain cobalt and molybdenum values). The examples describe the use of solutions containingNH3 and/or (NH4)2SO4 and MnCl2 or MnSO4. In an alternative embodiment the complex ore is used as a source of manganous ions by grinding the ore, reducing a portion thereof, recombining the two portions and leaching with an ammoniacal solution. Reduction may be achieved by heating with solid or liquid carboncontaining reducing agent or a reducing gas (Specifications 1,360,276 and 1,362,683). The residue from leaching is MnO(OH).
