Abstract
The arsenic content of iron pyrites is reduced by roasting the pyrites at 800 DEG C. or above in a bed fluidised by an oxygen-containing gas, which entrains the burnt material and removes it from the bed. The sulphur dioxide content of the roasting gas formed is maintained at at least 12%. Immediately the reaction products leave the furnace any reaction between the burnt material and the vaporized arseniferrous compounds, chiefly As2O3, is inhibited, either by physically separating the burnt material from the gases, or by rapidly cooling to below 300 DEG C., for example with water.
