Abstract

A process of reducing metals from sulphur-containing ores wherein a heated air blast passes through a burden comprising ore, solid carbonaceous material, and flux, comprises injecting simultaneously with the blast an auxiliary hydrogen-containing or hydrocarbon fuel and a finely-divided compound of a Group II metal. The compound may be calcium oxide and the auxiliary fuel may be a hydrocarbon oil containing at least 0.65 mol. of hydrogen per mol. of carbon and may also contain sulphur. The mixture of fuel and compound may be preheated to a temperature at or near that of the melting-point of the metal.
