Abstract
1509670 Sulphur dioxide by sinter roasting of ores METALLURGIE HOBOKEN-OVERPELT 21 Sept 1976 [7 Oct 1975] 39103/76 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide is produced in a sinter roasting process by igniting a layer of sulphide ore or concentrate on an endless moving grate under an ignition furnace by contacting it with a stream of hot gases produced by the burning of elemental sulphur in an oxygen containing combustion supporting gas, the gases produced by this ignition being added to the sulphur dioxide containing gases produced in the further sinter roasting of the ignited layer and the sulphur dioxide rich gas stream is then used in the production of sulphuric acid. The treatment of a galena based charge is exemplified; sulphurous materials based on concentrates of Pb and Zn, Pb and Cu or Cu are also mentioned. The preferred combustion supporting gas is air or oxygen enriched air.
