Abstract

1398331 Wet process phosphoric acid; calcium sulphate dihydrate MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 2 Aug 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 36195/72 Heading C1A Phosphoric acid having a concentration of 31 to 35% by weight P 2 O 5 and CaSO 4 ,2H 2 O are prepared by treating phosphate rock with H 2 SO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 at 72‹ to 82‹ C., the ratio 1 + <SP>+</SP>: CaO being less than 1 and the proportion of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 being 8 to 15% of the stoichiometric quantity of H 2 SO 4 needed to precipitate all Ca present in the phosphate rock, the H 2 O content during treatment being maintained such that the weight ratio H 2 O : P 2 O 5 is 4 to 5À5. Preferably the H 2 SO 4 concentration is 74 to 98% by weight and the CaSO 4 .2H 2 O is separated from the product by filtration, washed and the washings recycled to the reaction steps so as to maintain the H 2 O : P 2 O 5 ratio at 4 to 5À5.
