Abstract

1,188,080. Recovering tin. BILLITON MAATSCHAPPIJ, N.V. 31 Oct., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 51606/68. Heading C1A. Phosphorus, or a phosphorus-containing material, is added to a tin-bearing material, which also contains iron, in an amount of at least 0À1 gm. atom of P. per gm atom of Fe, and the tin is volatilized as tin sulphide. The phosphoruscontaining material may be any material in which phosphorus occurs in chemical combination, but is preferably a raw alkaline earth phosphate, in particular tricalcium phosphate. The atomic ratio P: Fe is preferably between 0À3:1 and 0À6:1. Carbonaceous material, such as coke or coal, may be added. If the stoichiometric amount of sulphur required for the formation of SnS is not present, sulphur-containing materials, such as pyrite or gypsum, may be added. The process may be carried out at temperatures above 1100‹ C. Additives, such as limestone, said or some silicates may be used to keep the slag fluid. The tin-bearing flue dust resulting from the process of the invention is processed according to known methods.
