Abstract

545,473. Treating ores &c. PITTSBURGH COAL CARBONIZATION CO. Dec. 7, 1940, No. 17406. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1940. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XII] Agglutinating carbonaceous material such as coal is carbonized at a low temperature with agitation in admixture with a non-agglutinating inorganic oxygen-containing compound for the production of balls off semi-coke. The coal may constitute 25-50 per cent. of the mixture. The compounds may be one or more oxides of zinc, tin, cadmium, lead, iron, chromium, calcium, copper, manganese, silicon, or phosphorus, alkali or alkaline earth carbonates, phosphate ores, flue dust, baghouse dust, precipitator dust, smelters' skimimings and drosses, and blue powder. In some cases the resulting balls may be further heated for the production of metals, e.g. zinc.
