Abstract
Low carbon iron is produced by heating agglomerates of very pure or concentrated iron oxides without reducing agents in a rotary furnace to which is added finely divided carbonaceous material, and separating the iron produced from the ashes and excess carbonaceous material. Synthetic iron oxides produced by the method described in Specification 553,315, [Group III], may be moistened and formed into pellets and dried or may be filtered to form filter cakes, broken and dried. The pellets may vary from bean size to 1 inch diameter. The carbonaceous material may be anthracite or coke and may be of a size between 4 mesh and 80 mesh. Limestone, lime, or dolomite may form part of the charge. Air may be admitted to the rotary furnace to burn the carbon monoxide formed. Specifications 636,677 and 674,236 also are referred to.
