Abstract
In a process of briquetting a phosphate ore, a mixture of a washed granular phosphate ore containing quartzite sand and a phosphate concentrate is calcined at 1400-1900 F., e.g. in a fluidized bed, and the hot mixture and compressed to form briquettes. The ratio of silica to phosphate in the mixture ischosen so that the briquettes are suitable for use in the production of phosphorus by reduction with carbon in an electric furnace. The initial phosphate ore is of -35 to + 150 mesh (-U.S.S.) screen, and in the calcining process the phosphate particles form an agglomerated coating round the silica particles.
