Abstract

<PICT:1028460/C4-C5/1> A process for producing coke dust from coal dust of particle size not more than 10 mm. comprises delivering the coal upwardly through a tube 1 in suspension in preheated air (entering at 2) so that a temperature of at least 750 DEG C. (1382 DEG F.) is attained in the tube 1 to coke the coal which is separated at 6, 10 from the gases (leaving at 4). The tube 1 is at least 3 metres long and the speed of the air in the tube 1 is at least 3 metres/sec., e.g. up to 30 metres/sec. Tube diameters of 0.5 to 3 metres are mentioned, and the air, which should be preheated to at least 200 DEG C., should amount to 500 to 1000 Nm3, preferably 700 Nm3, per metric ton of coal. Fuel gas may be added to the air. The coke may be cooled by water sprinkler 7 and water-cooled baffles 13, or the hot coke dust may be mixed with moist briquetting coal or used to dilute strongly coking coals. The gases at 4 may be used to drive a drier for the briquetting coal or for the coking coal, or may be used for steam raising. Four specific examples are described.
