Abstract

278,167. Johnson, J. Y. (I. G. Farbenindustrie, Akt.-Ges.). March 29, 1926. Extracting.-Iron ores are reduced in a revolving or shaft furnace by gases prepared from powdered fuel and oxygen or air enriched with oxygen, either in a separate producer or by blowing the fuel and oxygen &c. on to the liquid iron previously produced, and the reduced iron may be melted preferably by bringing the hot gases from the producer before employing them for the reduction. The fuel used may be brown coal, lignite dust, coal dust, low temperature coke dust, dried peat, or peat coke, and may be mixed with lime or other substances such as silicic acid. The oxygen &c. being admitted to the gas producer may be mixed with water vapour or other gases such as carbon dioxide or gases drawn off from the furnace either at the point where the reduction of the ores is completed or at an intermediary stage. Water gas or producer gas may be added to the reducing gases after leaving the producer and prior to their admittance to the, furnace. The gases from the furnace may, after treatment if necessary with steam in the presence of iron oxide or other suitable catalyst, be used for the synthetic production of ammonia methanol or higher organic compounds containing oxygen or for other hydrogenations. Specifications 22946/14 and 249,186 are referred to.
