Abstract
755,678. Carbonizing processes. VOGOGAS. SOC. ANON. April 30, 1954 [May 27, 1953], No. 12649/54. Classes 55(1) and 55(2). Coal, brown coal, peat, wood, &c. in granular or powder form or reduced to pieces of 10-40 m.m. is reacted in a producer with air or oxygen with or without steam until the temperature reaches 800‹-1200‹C. It is then reduced to 500‹-600‹ C. by shutting off the air supply and small pieces of cold material are introduced into the bed. Inert gas or steam is blown in to effect mixing of the hot and cold particles. About half of the material is withdrawn from, the producer and may be burnt under boilers, gasified, briquetted as with pitch for further coking or gasifying, or used for reduction of iron ore. In an example, a gas obtained by cracking the gas evolved from coal introduced into a bed of small coke pieces at about 1050‹- 1200‹C. comprises H 2 52, CH 4 22, CO12, N 2 5, heavy hydrocarbons 5, C0 2 4 per cent.
