Abstract

A method of recovering high calorific gases' e.g. from a converter or from a cyanide process' comprises exhausting the unburnt gas through a hood to a flue which contains an oxygen-binding material, e.g. coke, which burns off any oxygen which may have been introduced, intentionally or not, into the gases, the coke-filled flue thus acting as a gas producer. Risk of explosion is thus diminished. Between blows of the converter, the coke bed may be adapted to act as an induced draught gas producer, liquid slag from which is tapped off. Alternatively, a fan may be arranged automatically to start to draw gas from the converter at the beginning of each blow, and the fan may be controlled in accordance with the quantity of gas given off by the converter. Where the producer operates only during blows, the temperature of the coke may be maintained by introducing sufficient air or oxygen to support combustion. Steam, e.g. that normally used to seal the hood, may be introduced into the coke to promote the water gas reaction, or water may be sprayed into the converter gas. Two gas producers arranged in parallel may be employed alternately.
