Abstract
<PICT:0682966/III/1> Carbon black is produced by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon-containing fuel in a furnace, additional heat being furnished by the introduction into the furnace of hot inert gases produced outside the furnace by the combustion in an oxidant richer in oxygen than air, of part of the effluent gases from the p furnace which have been freed from carbon black. In the Fig., a gaseous or liquid fuel and air, one or both of which may be preheated, are injected at 2 into a passage 1, the effluent passing successively through a spray cooler 5, a heat-exchanger 10, a carbon black precipitator 6 and a drier 7. The hot dry effluent is separated at the pump 8, part going to a waste heat boiler 14 whilst part is recycled via pipe 9, heat-exchanger 10 and pipe 11 to a point 12 where it is burnt with an oxygen-rich gas or fuel oxygen, the combustion products being injected at 4 into the furnace to form a blanket of inert gas along the furnace wall. This injection of hot inert gas is preferably tangential. Specification 621,031 is referred to.
