Abstract

In a modification of or improvement in the invention described in the parent Specification the partial combustion of the fluid fuel is obtained by using a gas containing over 70 per cent of oxygen and the products of partial combustion are burned to complete combustion at the entry end of a continuous furnace to preheat the metal. The metal being heated may be on the moving hearth of a straight or annular furnace and move in counter current to the products of partial combustion of town's gas with an oxygen/nitrogen mixture or with 100 per cent oxygen, the products of partial combustion being burned with air or air and oxygen, preheated or not, to preheat the metal. The waste gases may be used to preheat fluid fuel, air or air and oxygen.
