Abstract

<PICT:1107425/C1/1> In a rotary furnace for roasting limestone in which air for combustion and the charge pass in parallel flow therethrough, waste furnace gases pass up a shaft 9 containing a recuperator 10 in which air for combustion is preheated before passing along a pipe 101 to a burner 5. This air is additionally heated, and its oxygen content is reduced, by liquid gaseous or pulverized fuels injected into the pipe at 14. The air is also diluted by waste gas from the furnace added via a pipe 111. Air from a cooling grate passes along a pipe 13 and is used either as primary air for the burner or to preheat the charge, preheating of the latter also being effected by combustion air passing along a pipe 12.
