Abstract

A method of using unpurified shaft furnace top gas as a fuel for combustion in a slag tap furnace is characterized in that prior to its admission into the furnace the top gas is heated to raise its temperature to at least such a height that on combustion of the top gas, dust particles in the top are melted; e.g. both top gas and combustion air or gas may be heated to temperatures exceeding 700 DEG C. The top gas or the top gas and combustion air, prior to entering the slag tap furnace, may be conducted over the liquid slag leaving the furnace or rotary drum if one is provided to receive the slag from the furnace, or may be passed through the slag if this is arranged to flow over a weir. Alternatively the top gas and combustion gas may be introduced tangentially into a slag vessel, e.g. from opposite sides thereof so that the slag rotates within the vessel and is heated by the partial combustion of the top gas, during which process some of the dust contained therein is melted and simultaneously the top gas and combustion gas become heated; or the gases may be forced under pressure into the liquid slag bath.
