970,696. Preventing admission of air; dust collectors. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Sept. 20, 1963 [Sept. 20, 1962], No. 37178/63. Headings F4B and F4X. Entry of air through the charging opening 2 of a shaft furnace 1 is prevented by flowing an oxygen poor gas into the furnace below the charging opening. This reduces the risk of explosions in the dustcollecting apparatus 6, and a waste gas fired recuperator 9. The oxygen poor gas may be taken from the flue outlet of the recuperator 9 and delivered to a bustle pipe 13 surrounding the upper end of the furnace. A by-pass 15 between the waste gas outlet pipe and the inert gas delivery pipe 12 enables combustion products from the recuperator 9, which is heated by other fuel while the furnace is not in operation, to be used to purge the dust collector 6. Dampers in the gas mains enable the gas flow to be controlled.
