Apparatus for charging preheated material into an electric reduction furnace 2 comprises a bunker 1 with material supply pipes 5 and an annular chamber 7 with openings 8 into the bunker supplied with hot furnace gases through a pipe 6 by a fan 11. Additional fluid or solid materials, e.g. natural gas, hydrocarbons, or coal dust may be supplied through a pipe system 10. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the material supply pipes are used to carry the hot gases to the bunker, some being provided with fans or with branch pipes supplying the additives.
