Abstract
Iron is refined, e.g. pig iron in a converter or open hearth furnace, by means of a mixture of refining agents preheated to a temperature exceeding 1000 DEG C. and placed in intimate contact with the liquid iron so that the carbon therein is directly transformed into CO. The mixture, preferably air or gaseous oxygen and water vapour and/or CO2, may be bottom blown through the liquid iron in a converter and/or projected on to the liquid iron surface or slag layer, if any, at a velocity of at least 100 m./sec. Powdered substances which emit CO2 or H2O may be added to the mixture for preheating therewith, together with a powdered slagging agent such as lime, fluorspar or Fe-Mn. The refining agents may be preheated by escape furnace gases or by means of a burner, preferably a flame thrower in which cold or preheated fuel, e.g. charcoal dust, sawdust, coke-oven gas, liquefied petroleum gases or oils, is burnt with cold or preheated air or oxygen. The temperature of reaction in the liquid iron is preferably less than 1800 DEG C. except when scrap iron is added when it may be at least 2000 DEG C.
