Abstract

<PICT:0834634/III/1> <PICT:0834634/III/2> In the production of carbon black by injecting hydrocarbon to be decomposed as radially directed liquid sprays into swirling blast flame gases passing through a cylindrical reaction chamber 1, the blast flame gases are produced by injecting fluid fuel axially and oxygen-containing gas tangentially into an enlarged zone 15, Fig. 2, of length less than the diameter of one, or more, preferably two, symmetrically-positioned, cylindrical combustion chambers 14 of greater length than diameter opening tangentially into chamber 1. The combustion of the fuel should be at least 90% complete before the gases enter chamber 1. Fuel oil under pressure, which may be preheated, e.g. 400-600 DEG C. at 2-10 lbs./sq. inch, entering at 17 is atomized by air or steam, which may be preheated and under a pressure not less than 40 lbs./sq. inch, entering at 19 and the resulting atomized stream enters combustion chamber 14 axially through 20, which may be surrounded by axial air inlet 21. Air is also injected tangentially through one, or more, preferably two pipes 23 so that the total amount of air is in excess of that for complete combustion. Alternatively a two-fluid atomizing nozzle without prior mixing may be used to inject the fuel. The combustion gases enter enlarged zone 11 of chamber 1 which has a water-jacketed outer end 9. The hydrocarbon to be decomposed is injected through six symmetrically positioned two fluid atomizers 26 provided with water-jackets using air or steam as atomizing gas.
