In gasifying finely divided fuels in suspension in oxygen or oxygen enriched air and possibly endothermic reacting media a metal gas withdrawal pipe 6 from the upper part of a reaction chamber of refractory material projects downwardly into the chamber and has a water &c. cooling jacket 7. Both are supported outside and independently of the chamber on carriers 8.
