Classes 51(i), 51(ii) and 55(i) Solid carbonaceous fuels are gasified in a producer in the form of a stationary or agitated bed of coarsely granular fuel in a lower zone of the producer and as a suspension of finely divided fuel in an upper and separate zone of the producer, a gasifying agent containing free oxygen being supplied to both zones and the resulting gases mixed together. The process is preferably carried out at a pressure of 10-20 atmospheres and the coarse-grained and fine fuels may be charged together or separately. Liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons may be admitted to the upper gasification zone. In a described form the producer comprises a water-jacketed chamber 1 provided with a watercooled rotary grate 6 and an upper downwardly extending zone 4 having a pipe 22 for admitting a gasifying agent and screw conveyers 18 and 20 for charging fine- and coarsegrained fuel from hoppers 19 and 21 respectively. The water-cooled grate 6 is mounted on a hollow shaft 7 secured by water-cooled arms 26 to the shell of the producer and has an upward extension 8 with stirring arms 9. Water is supplied to the grate 6, extension 8 and arms 9 through a pipe 14 and a gas containing free oxygen is supplied through pipe 12 to a central pipe 30 within extension 8 and passes together with the steam generated in the various parts of the grate into the bed of coarse-grained fuel 3 through an opening 13 provided in the walls of the extension 8. Ash collecting in the pit 23 is periodically discharged through a valve 24; gases produced leave by an outlet 27. A water-cooled plate 15 secured by ribs 16 to the shell of the producer may be provided adjacent the upper end of extension 8 so that coarse-grained fuel charged through the zone 4 falls on to the plate and is cooled before being fed into the bed 3 by an arm 9.
