Abstract
800,409. Gasefying solid fuels ; discharging slag from gas generators, KOPPERS G.m.b.H., H. July 19, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954], No. 20916/55. Classes 51 (1) and 55 (1). Apparatus for gasefying finely-divided solid fuels in suspension with oxygen and with or without endothermic gasefying agents comprises a reaction chamber 12 with inlets 11 for reactants, a water-jacketed gas outlet 13 and an outlet 15 for drawing off ashes as liquid slag into a water-filled discharge dish 19, the outlet 15 being provided with a water-cooled casing 16 of frusto-conical shape and of a diameter such that the ashes collecting adjacent the outlet are maintained in a liquid condition. Scraper arms 20, 21 and 22 are provided to remove any accumulation of solidified slag. If necessary, an hydraulically-operated plunger device 23 may be provided to break up any thin bridge of slag. In a modification the water-cooled casing 16 is arranged with its narrower end downwards and the scraper arms are water-cooled and held by a rotary head in the centre of the discharge dish 19. The discharge dish may be arranged to rotate on a turn-table and gasefying agents may be supplied by a pipe in the vicinity of the scraper arms. The diameter of the opening 15 is determined by consideration of (a) the ash melting point, (b) the amount of fuel being gasefied, and (c) the gasefication temperature. In an example of apparatus gasefying 50 tons of coal per day at a temperature (as measured by the temperature of the gas produced) of 1310‹ C., the ash having a melting-point of 1280‹ C., the inner diameter of the discharge opening is approximately 600 mm.
