[Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for gasefying pulverulent fuels in suspension with oxygen and gasefying agents having an endothermic reaction has an indirect heat exchanger, e.g. a steam generating device, connected to the outlet of the gasefication chamber, the free cross-sections of the gas passages in a part of the heat exchanger being dimensioned so that with a constant volume of gas produced the speeds of flow of the gas passing through the heat exchanger are increased such that while a high degree of heat transfer in the heat exchanger is maintained the gasefication residues entrained in the gas are not allowed to form a deposit on the walls of the heat exchanger. The speed of flow of the gas in the heat exchanger preferably does not fall below 9 m/sec. and may advantageously be as high as 15 m/sec. The heat exchanger may be arranged above or below the gasefication chamber. In Figl 1, the reactants are fed through nozzles 2 into a gasefication chamber 1 of hot gas, passes out of the chamber through a water-cooled outlet 3 into a radiant boiler 4, the gas passages 6 in the upper part of which are of such crosssection that the speed of flow of the gas is above 9 m/sec. From the boiler 4 the gas passes through a tube boiler 8 and a dust separator 9 to a gas outlet 10. Fig. 2 shows a gasefication chamber 20 supplied with reactants through nozzles 21 and provided at its base with a water-cooled element 22 having an extension plate 23 dipping into a rotating water dish 24, ash falling into the water being removed by a deflector plate 26. A cylindrical boiler 28 with water circulating means 27 extends through the gasefication chamber and defines with the boiler 29 a passage 30 through which the gas from the chamber 20 passes to a dust separator 31 and the gas outlet 32. A seal 33 is provided between the rotating dish 24 and the boiler 29, a plate 34 being arranged above the seal to deflect ash into the dish 24. Watercooled scraper arms 35 and 36 rotate with the dish 24 to prevent accumulations of ash.
