Abstract

713,004. Gasifying finely divided fuels. KOPPERS GES., H. July 10, 1951 (Aug. 17, 1950; May 31, 1951], No. 16355/51. Class 55 (1). [Also in Group XI] In apparatus for producing combustible gases by the gasification of finely divided fuels, particularly pulverized solid fuel, in which a stream of tuel-oxygen mixture is surrounded by an envelope of flowing gaseous medium, e.g. steam, for protecting the reaction chamber walls, a liquid cooled metal jacket 5 forms a casing for an inlet nozzle or group of inlet nozzles 3 for the fuel-oxygen mixture, and with a second liquid cooled metal jacket 6 forms an annular entry 4 for the gaseous medium, whilst the walls 2 of the reaction chamber otherwise consist of refractory material. The cooling liquid may be water or a molten metal, and the nozzles 3 may have a separate water-cooling system to maintain them at a lower temperature that the annular nozzle 4. In an alternative construction no separate metal cooling jacket 5 is provided, the inner wall of the annular steam nozzle being constituted by the water cooled casing of the fuel-oxygen nozzles.
