571,878. Gas - producers. STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AKTIEBOLAG. March 19, 1943, No. 4515. Convention date, June 13, 1942. [Class 55 (i)] A gas mixture rich in carbon monoxide is produced in a vertical cupola provided with electrodes for forming at least one arc in its central portion, the fuel being passed continuously through the cupola at such a rate that it becomes incandescent and gas rich in carbon dioxide being passed through the cupola and-the greatest part of the gas being caused to flow close to the cupola walls. In the downdraught producer shown in Fig. 1, some of the supply pipes 3 for the gas mixture are disposed round-the periphery of the cover to produce a downward current of cooling gas along the walls and other supply pipes 3a produce a hot gas current in the vicinity of the are produced by electrodes 1. Gas can also be introduced through the coal supply pipes 2 by means of pipes 3b. A slack discharging device 11 is provided. In a modification, a horizontal arc is employed and gas is supplied through the annular opening between the coal pipe and surrounding gas pipe. In a further modification, the gas pipe is inside the coal pipe and the electrodes are arranged through the cover. In the up-draught producer shown in Fig. 4, vertical electrodes 1 are used and the gas mixture enters through pipes 3, hot and cold gas being mixed in the constricted portion 4 and carburetted gas leaving through pipes 5. In modifications, horizontal or inclined electrodes may be used. Six electrodes arranged symmetrically may be employed, each pair being connected to a different phase. The gas produced may be used in the manufacture of iron sponge.
