Coking processes; producers.-Apparatus for use in showering powdered coal at a high pressure and in the presence of air or gas comprises concentric shafts 3, 8, a portable furnace or gas supply main 1, and a nozzle having a cooling- water annulus 16 and a material distributing- annulus 17. The annulus 17 communicates through removable tubes 19 with the throat 2 of the nozzle so that the charge is fed into the gas stream issuing from the main 1 and carried up the inner shaft and down the annular space between the shafts to outlets 5. The shafts are built up of heat insulated sections so that the apparatus may be made of varying heights. The gas main is held against the nozzle by suspension bolts 12. In a modification, the material is fed into the gas stream through a passage 20, Fig. 3, extending through the gas main which is connected in a gastight manner with the nozzle by a liquid or sand seal 13. In this case, additional gas and material may be fed into the upper part of the apparatus either through a cone-controlled passage 33 or passages 35 from an annular pipe 34. In a further arrangement, the shafts are of metal and are enclosed in a jacket through which hot gas is passed. In another modification, an inverted bell is placed over the inner shaft so as to increase the path of travel of the gas.
