715,789. Steam boilers; heating apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. July 29, 1952 [July 31, 1951; Oct. 24, 1951], No. 19138/52. Classes 64(2) and 123 (2) A finely divided solid is carried upwards by a gas. stream through a vertical chamber at a speed of at least 5 metres per second, and flows down through another vertical chamber in which it is maintained as a dense fluidized bed by the introduction of a further gas at the base of the second chamber, heat transfer occurring in the two chambers between the solid and its surroundings. In the form shown, sand is carried up through a central tube C by hot gases from a combustion chamber A and, after separation at the top from the hot gases, flows down through an annular chamber between the tube C and a surrounding cylinder B. Air supplied through a pipe M fluidizes the sand in the annular chamber. The sand returns to the central tube through holes G with air blown in through a pipe L. The sand is separated from the hot gases partly by change of direction and partly by a cyclone separator E. The sand transmits the heat absorbed from the hot gases to pipes D through which water to generate steam or substances undergoing an endothermic reaction may flow. Hydrocarbons may be burnt in the chamber A with insufficient air for complete combustion, so as to produce carbon black, which is separated from the hot gases after they have been separated from the sand. The two vertical chambers may be separate. Dimensions are given. Specification' 695.492 is referred to.
