Abstract
<PICT:0669511/III/1> Carbon black is produced by blasting a mixture of a fluid fuel and free oxygen-containing gases into a porous bed of refractory material, burning the mixture as it passes through the bed in contact with the refractory surfaces, passing the gaseous combustion products from the surface of the bed up through a chamber as a non-turbulent stream, passing a hydrocarbon as a plurality of substantially vertical confined streams up through the bed in indirect heat-exchange therewith and flowing them into the rising stream of combustion products above the bed, whereby a carbon black suspension is formed, which is withdrawn and cooled, and from which carbon black is separated. Air under superatmospheric pressure passes from inlet 20 into windbox 19 and is evenly distributed by perforated plate 25 before passing through burner ports 15 in burner block 14. Fuel gas under pressure passes through pipe 27 and manifold 26 to jets 29 situated behind ports 15. The resulting combustible mixture is ignited and burns on the surface of the refractory material in porous bed 18, and the combustion products, preferably devoid of oxygen at 2300-3500 DEG F., pass into refractory-lined furnace chamber 1. Hydrocarbon gas, with or without steam, passes from line 30 and manifold 31 to refractory tubes 33, wherein pyrolysis is initiated by heat from the bed 18, and thence at say an equal velocity into the combustion products in chamber 1. The effluent gases pass through throat 9 and conduit 11 to conventional cooling and collecting apparatus. Specifications 655,799 and 669,511 are referred to.
