Abstract

<PICT:0654864/III/1> <PICT:0654864/III/2> Furnace black is produced by injecting, into a turbulent stream of blast flame gases flowing at high linear velocity through an unobstructed unconstricted rectangular reaction chamber not over 1 1/2 feet wide and of greater height, the hydrocarbon to be decomposed as a plurality of streams from 1/4 -\ba3/4 inch diameter spaced up each side of the chamber near and equidistant from the downstream end, where the ratio of the mass velocity of the hydrocarbon to that of the blast flame gases is 3 : 1 to 10 : 1. Air and fuel gas are injected through burner block 3, Fig. 3, into refractory-lined reaction chamber 1. Methane, enriched to at least 1200 B.Th.U. by addition of heavier hydrocarbons, with or without up to 40 per cent steam and preheated to, say, 700 DEG F., is injected through ports 22. The turbulent stream at 2400-2750 DEG F. passes to blending chamber 4 and cylindrical chamber 5 where it is cooled by water sprays 6 to control the contact time to not more than 1/2 sec.; additional water-sprays 35, 36 may also be provided. The effluent from chamber 5 passes to a conventional collection unit. In the burner assembly, Fig. 4, fuel gas is injected through pipes 15 and manifolds 14 to jets 18 positioned behind burner ports 7 in burner block 3. Air under superatmospheric pressure passes through inlet 11 into wind-box 10 and is evenly distributed by vanes 12 and adjustable dampers 13. The position of the jets may be horizontally adjusted relative to the burner ports and pipes 15 may be graduated outside the wind-box to indicate position.
