Abstract

In the process for producing furnace black by decomposing hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, or enriched natural gas, with or without steam, in which fuel gas and <PICT:0694477/III/1> air is blasted from burner 6, which may be of the type described in Specification 654,340, into a heat insulated, elongated reaction chamber 1 through ports 12, and burned to form a turbulent stream of hot gases at a temperature in excess of that at which the hydrocarbons are decomposed to form carbon black, the hydrocarbon make is introduced from supply pipe 19 through a plurality of refractory, e.g. silicon carbide, tear-shaped cross-section, manifolds 20 extending across the chamber perpendicular to its side walls at a point spaced from the upstream end and uniformly spaced over the height of the chamber. The manifolds have openings 24 uniformly spaced along the downstream edge to inject streams of hydrocarbon make, preheated by passage through the manifolds, into the hot gases in the chamber in a direction parallel to the chamber axis. The gases pass from the chamber through a cooling conduit equipped with water sprays to the separating and collecting apparatus. The manifold 20 may be connected with supply pipe 19 by unions 22 to facilitate removal and replacement, and may have removable inspection caps 23.
