Abstract

<PICT:0633945/III/1> Carbon black is made by admitting a relatively large body of air divided into several separate parallel streams into an elongated unrestricted combustion space, injecting into the combustion space a multiplicity of small jets of carbon-containing gas, e.g. natural gas, arranged in rows between adjacent air streams, flowing the jets of gas in the same direction as the air streams and passing the gas directly and in well distributed manner into the air at such higher velocity than that of the air as to establish a localized turbulent mixture about the jets under conditions of incomplete combustion thereby decomposing unconsumed gas while in free space and collecting carbon particles from the combustion products. The shell of rectangular steel furnace 10 with refractory lining 13 converges to outlet 12 and has alternate refractory piers 14 and burner boxes 15 (see Group XI). Air is directed through diaphragms 18 from inlets 16 and issues between the parallel burner tubes 20 while natural gas is fed as a multiplicity of parallel or divergent high velocity jets from orifices in the front walls of burner tubes 20 causing localized turbulence wherein combustion takes place with carbon black-formation as the swirling flame progresses towards the outlet 12.
