Abstract

<PICT:0672446/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0672446/IV (b)/2> <PICT:0672446/IV (b)/3> <PICT:0672446/IV (b)/4> Apparatus for the production of acetylene by the incomplete combustion of gaseous hydrocarbons with oxygen with the formation of a flame in the reaction chamber, which apparatus comprises a supply means for each of the heated gases which are arranged as symmetrically as possible about the axis of the direction of flow of the gas mixture, an elongated mixing chamber of, preferably, circular cross-section, having a length of at least three times its greatest width following the supply means, and a gas distributer following the mixing chamber and preceding the reaction chamber. The supply means may consist of concentric tubes. The mixing chamber may widen conically towards the gas distributer. In Fig. 1, the gas supply tube a and the smaller tube b for the supply of the other gas are concentrically fitted into one another to form nozzle 1. This merges into a mixing tube 2 and then into conical mixing chamber 3 which is separated from the reaction chamber 5 by a gas distributer 4. Whirling means 6 imparts a spiral movement to one of the gas streams. Fig. 2 is a similar apparatus in which the tube b terminates in a bundle of narrow tubes 7. In the modifications shown in Figs. 3a and 3b, an annular nozzle 8a or 8b is provided by which the gas stream entering through the tube a is split up into two parts, so that one of the partial streams meets the gas stream introduced through the tube b in its axis part while the other meets it at its periphery. One example is given.ALSO:<PICT:0672446/III/1> Hydrogen in admixture with carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen and methane, ethylene and acetylene is obtained by the incomplete combustion of heated methane and oxygen with the formation of a flame in the reaction chamber, characterized in that the supply means for each of the heated gases are arranged as symmetrically as possible about the axis of the direction of flow of the gas mixture, the mixing chamber following the supply means has a length of at least three times its greatest width being preferably of circular cross-section, and the gas distributer follows the mixing chamber and precedes the reaction chamber. The supply means may consist of concentric tubes, and the mixing chamber may widen conically towards the gas distributer. In Fig. 1, concentric gas supply tubes a and b form nozzle 1 which merges into mixing tube 2. The conical mixing chamber 3 is separated from the reaction chamber 5 by gas distributer 4. Whirling means 6 imparts a spiral movement to one of the gas steams.
