Abstract

<PICT:0661057/III/1> Liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. catalytic process distillate having an A.P.I. gravity 21-23, which may be preheated to 300 DEG -600 DEG F, is supplied through tube 13 and unheated hydrocarbon gas, say natural or refinery gas, or air is injected through tube 10 and the resultant suspension passes into combustion chamber 18 of cylindrical refractory-lined furnace 12. Air is injected through spaced ports 14 preferably in a direction tangential to the inner wall of the furnace so that partial combustion in the resulting turbulent admixture raises the temperature of the gases to say 1200 DEG -1600 DEG F during their passage in say 0.06-0.12 sec. through chamber 18, which is preferably 1/6th of the length of the furnace. The gases pass through orifice in collar 17 and expand into reaction zone 19, while further combustion is effected and wherein the temperature falls from 2650 DEG -2500 DEG F during 0.14-0.28 sec., and pass to flue 20 wherein the temperature falls to 2150 DEG F in 0.18-0.36 sec. The resultant gas mixture may be cooled to 600 DEG F by water spray, and then passes to a carbon black collecting apparatus. The orifice in collar 17 should have a cross-sectional area equal to 1/7th of the cross-sectional area of the furnace so that the pressure in chamber 18 is 4-7.5 inches of water while that in zone 19 is 0.6-2 inches of water.
